    What Does a Science Teacher Do?

    The work of a science teacher varies by grade level. For instance, elementary science educators focus on foundational knowledge and sparking curiosity. In middle school, teachers often begin to introduce students to subject-specific content like biology or environmental science. At the high school level, science teachers typically specialize in one discipline, such as chemistry or physics, and teach more rigorous, lab-based classes that serve as steppingstones to college or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers.

    How Do You Become a Science Teacher? 

    The journey toward becoming a science teacher varies by individual. Whether you’re starting right after high school or changing careers, there are options available to get you ready for the classroom! 

    If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree… If you have a non-education bachelor’s degree… 
    Earn a bachelor’s degree in education or in a scientific field such as biology, chemistry or science. Secondary (and sometimes middle school) educators may be required to have a certain number of undergraduate hours in your specialty. These requirements vary by state. Complete an initial-licensure program:  Earn a Certificate in Transition to Teaching in either elementary or secondary education.  OR  Earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in either elementary or secondary education. 
    Complete a teacher preparation program and gain hands-on experience through student teaching. 
    Obtain teacher certification and/or licensure according to your state and school district’s requirements. Obtain teacher certification and/or licensure according to your state and school district’s requirements. 
    Optional: Enhance your qualifications and expertise with a master’s degree in education

    How to Find a Job as a Science Teacher  

    Once you’ve completed your degree and obtained the required teacher certification in your state, it’s time to enter the job market. Science educators are in demand, especially those certified to teach high school level science classes in biology, chemistry, physics or environmental science.  

    You can find open positions through school district websites, state education job boards and platforms such as Indeed and LinkedIn. Keep in mind that while public schools often have the most openings, you may find additional employment opportunities at private schools, charter schools and alternative education programs.  

    It’s also important to note that your specialization can influence the roles available to you. For instance, a biology teacher may teach anatomy or ecology courses, while a chemistry teacher might run labs in stoichiometry or thermodynamics. Being open to interdisciplinary science roles can additionally increase your chances of finding a position.
